The Trouble With Automatic Locks

Automatic locks are often treated as if they’re a real selling point for any vehicle. In fact, they’re becoming standard on most cars. Sadly, they can be more trouble than they’re worth.

Smart Locks Malfunction. A Lot.

We probably get 3,000 calls every month simply because smart locks have failed to perform as they were supposed to.

For example, automatic locks are supposed to remain open when the keys are in the car, but in reality they fail to detect the keys all the time. Sometimes this “feature” can even put babies and young children at risk, as this news story demonstrates.

Obviously, if someone you love is trapped in a hot car you do what you need to do. But, in general, it’s not a good idea to damage your car if you need to get inside of it. The repair work can cost a pretty penny. Calling an automotive locksmith is usually the safer option.

In the meantime, don’t assume your automatic locks are reliable. Don’t ever set your keys down inside of your car, even if it’s for “just a minute.” Make a conscious effort to keep them in your purse, pocket, or bag. It’s also not a bad idea to keep at least one car door ajar until you’re absolutely sure you’ve gotten everything (and everyone) you need.

Key fobs malfunction, too.

Sometimes the key itself is the problem. If you were to open up your smart key casing you’d find a complex electronic device. Those systems can, and do, go haywire. When this happens you will typically need a full automotive rekey.

Smart keys transmit a coded electronic signal to a reader located inside of the car. If the car doesn’t detect the signal it won’t open the doors. In newer cars the vehicle won’t start, either. More and more you’ll find those old turn-key ignitions replaced by start buttons. A new key must be programmed to speak the car’s language before it will work.
