History of Oak Lawn, IL
Oak Lawn, Illinois is a Chicago suburb. Oak Lawn is one of the biggest municipalities in Cook County.
In the 1800s, many settlers were attracted to this area as it was a dense forest of black oaks through which a small stream called Stony creek flowed. In 1835, James Campbell bought a tract of land between Cicero Avenue and Central Avenue and from 95th to 103rd street. Later in 1840, he lost the land in a public auction to the Illinois government. The northern half was bought by John Simpson, who was one of the early founders of Oak Lawn.
In 1909, Oak Lawn was incorporated as a town. At this time, the town of Oak Lawn spanned just 1.5 square miles and had 300 residents. Among these were many Dutch people who came to do farming here. In 1911, electric poles and electric lines replaced the Black Oaks which were the earliest hallmarks of the town. In 1925, Oak Lawn got its first bank established here.
Slowly, the town grew commercially over the years. After WWII, many veterans who returned home settled in Oak Lawn increasing its population.
In 2002, a major redevelopment program was organized for Oak Lawn. Many blocks downtown were demolished and reconstructed as condominiums and commercial complexes. Today’s Oak Lawn has modern apartments, high-rise buildings, and new shopping areas.
