Locksmith Services in Englewood, Illinois
History of Englewood, IL
Englewood, Illinois is an official community area in Cook County, Illinois. Englewood was a forest before the first railroad was built in 1852. It came to be known as Junction Grove, and it pioneered the foundation of present Englewood. The Germans and Irish were the earliest settlers of this place but were replaced by East European immigrants by 1887. The first church was established in 1869, and in the preceding years, several other Protestant churches cropped up in the community. By 1922, Englewood and 2900 street railway lines connected it to other parts of Chicago.
Even during the Great Depression years of the 1930s, Englewood was a thriving community. It had close to 90.000 inhabitants with its retail district in Halsted Street marked by Sears Departmental Store. Since then, Englewood has struggled to keep its head up. Falling real estate values, white flight, and spiraling crime rates have hurt the community. By 2010, the population has declined to below 30000. The municipality sold off vacant plots at $1 to remove unsold properties from its rolls.
Fortunately, there’s another side to the story. Englewood is working for a better future with business people like Sunni Powell, the owner of Powell’s Barbershop. She runs a mentoring and job program for the neighborhood youth. Each year, the Englewood Jazz Fest is organized and led by saxophonist Ernest Khabeer Dawkins. Community organizations are also working to bolster the spirit of Englewood and restoring balance to this lively town.
