Early settlers came to Brighton Park during the construction of the Illinois and Michigan canal. Brighton Park took its name from the Brighton neighborhood of England, which was famed for its cattle market.
Originally, the town was formed at the crossroads of the Blue Island Plank road with the Old Portage Trail. The Old Portage trail was used to carry water from the Des Plaines and Chicago rivers. It has now transformed into the Archer Road or the Archer Avenue of today. Similarly, the blue SIland Park Road is the present Western Avenue. Archer Avenue is the main road or thoroughfare of Brighton Park today.
John McCaffery, a local businessman, built plank road across the village in the place now called Western Avenue.
