Background on Berwyn, IL
Berwyn, Illinois is a suburb of Chicago in Cook County. The city has a total population of over 55,000.
Let us understand a little more about this wonderful town. In the early days, Berwyn was an area where the Green Bay Trail and Ottawa Trail intersected.
In 1890, attorneys Charles Piper and Wilbur Andrews bought land from the Marshall Field syndicate. They doubled their land in 1891 and tried to build a railroad there, but there were already two stations at Harlem and LaVergne. So, they built a new station as the main stop for all trains and named it ‘Berwyn’ after the suburb in Philadelphia. Thus, it was on the 17th May 1890 that Berwyn was born.
On the north side of Berwyn, John Kelly developed the South Oak Park precinct extending from Ridgeland to Harlem Avenue and from Roosevelt Road to 16th street. The Union Mutual Life Insurance Company built homes for its employees here. Soon the Oak Park-river forest School district was established. In 1901, Oak Park merged with Berwyn. In 1902, Berwyn became an incorporated village. On the 6th of June 1908, the State of Illinois gave the official charter to Berwyn as a city.
Berwyn is a rapidly-growing suburb with beautiful bungalows and houses. The residences are designed with stained glass, clay tiles, and terracotta. Manicured lawns and gardens are their settings.
